RADIATION FROM HANFORD AND INFANT MORTALITY

A MOTHER'S PLEA: "REMEMBER THESE BABIES
FROM JUST ONE CEMETERY, SO MANY DEAD BABIES"

ANOTHER STORY FROM A HANFORD VICTIM.
THERE ARE THOUSANDS.
THERE ARE NEW ONES EVERY YEAR!

PART 2 OF A DOCUMENTARY PROVING HANFORD KNEW THE DESIGN WOULD FAIL BUT WENT AHEAD WITH THE FACILITY ANYWAY.

"America's Fukushima"
NEVERENDING HANFORD

"If disaster strikes Richland, it will be because the federal government (namely, the Department of Energy) allowed 56 million gallons of radioactive waste to fester in this sandy soil, where some say it is rife for an explosion. And, critics charge, the DOE has watched its prime contractor on the site, Bechtel, grossly overcharge the American public for a waste-treatment plant so poorly built that, once it's finished (if it ever gets finished), feeding nuclear material through it could cause a catastrophe."

HANFORD IS "AMERICA'S FUKUSHIMA", BUT NOTHING IS BEING DONE TO STOP  IT...JUST LIKE IN JAPAN.

THE DEATHS CONTINUE, THE BIRTH DEFECTS CONTINUE, JUST AS AT THE CHERNOBYL SITE, THE FUKUSHIMA SITE, EVERY SITE WHERE NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS ARE LEAKING, CONSTANTLY LEAKING.

400 % Spike in Rare Birth Defects Near Leaking Hanford Nuclear Site

The Washington State Health Department is trying to identify the cause of an unusually high number of rare birth defects in south central Washington, around the leaking Hanford nuclear site.
While the Washington State Health Department stress the need for a detailed study of the cluster, there is little doubt about the cause for the alarming rate of the severe birth defects among local residents who are pointing at the leaking Hanford nuclear site.

February 2013, Governor Jay Inslee drew attention to the fact, that at least six of the tanks, which are containing radioactive waste, were leaking. The alarm was raised, after decreasing radioactivity levels were observed within the tanks, while no elevated levels were observed outside of the double shell tanks themselves. The situation developed into a scandal due to federal authorities failure to respond in due time and, according to critics, with appropriate measures.

According to the Walla Walla coroner’s website, they have ‘unclaimed’ remains of nearly 100 cremated babies95% of the babies died between 1946 and the 1970s (56 of 57 boys33 of 36 girls). “Hanford produced its first plutonium on Nov 6, 1944 [until] the reactor shutdown in the 1970s.” -Source

THE BABY TOOTH PROJECT FOR DETECTING RADIATION LEVELS
The initial impetus for the Baby Tooth Survey came from an article in the British scientific journal Nature by Dr. Herman M. Kalckar, a Johns Hopkins University biochemist (and former research fellow in the laboratory of Carl and Gerty Cori at the Washington University School of Medicine from 1940 to 1943).

Kalckar suggested that primary teeth, as they were extracted or shed, might provide valuable information as to the absorption of radioactive elements by the body.  He proposed an International Milk Teeth Radiation Census, which would “contribute important information concerning the amount and kind of radiation received by the most sensitive section of any population, namely, the children.”

Washington University School of Dentistry professors Harold L. Rosenthal, John T. Bird, and John E. Gilster conducted the scientific study of the baby teeth.
They found that the radioactive strontium-90 levels in the baby teeth of children born from 1945 to 1965 had risen 100-fold and that the level of strontium-90 rose and fell in correlation with atomic bomb tests.

Early results from the Baby Tooth Survey, and a U. S. Public Health Service study that showed an alarming rise in the percentage of underweight live births and of childhood cancer, helped persuade President John F. Kennedy to negotiate a treaty with the Soviet Union to end above-ground testing of atomic bombs in 1963.

BUT IN PLACES NEAR HANFORD THE BOMBS HAVEN'T STOPPED GOING OFF.

The following statements are from residents who live near Hanford.
They all appeared in the documentary "Deadly Deception: General Electric, Nuclear Weapons, and Our Environment"
(Academy Award Winner for Best Documentary Short: 1991: 29 mins.)

June Casey: And then I started losing my hair, and I had long, naturally-curly hair. I then had to start wearing a wig, and have since lost two babies, one through miscarriage and the other through stillbirth.

Tom Bailey (Mesa, Washington): The next house, cancer. This house, a man and a woman lived here by the name Voss.

Jack Voss died of cancer and his wife gave birth to a deformed child.
She drowned the child in the bathtub and then committed suicide that same day.

Down the road a little further here, the next household, the father died of cancer, the mother has leukemia right now, and the daughter has thyroid cancer.

Tom Bailey: This is the north corner of it here, beginning with the Weinberger household.
The 1973 March of Dimes poster child was born there with no eyes.

The family back in behind here, the boy and his wife just had a child born with no skull.

America's Atomic Time Bomb: Hanford Nuclear Waste Still Poses Serious Risks

The lambs were born without eyes or mouths. Some had legs that had grotesquely grown together; others had no legs at all. Many were stillborn. Thirty-one were lost in a single night.

As chronicled by journalist Michael D'Antonio in his 1993 book Atomic Harvest, their tale is one of thousands of horror stories that took place in the area surrounding Hanford, Washington, the site of America's first full-scale plutonium production facility.
The site haunts the locals to this day -- and imperils them.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) recently revised its timetable for Hanford's decontamination, the biggest environmental cleanup in American history.

The end date was moved back, once again.
It now hopes to finally wrap up this Herculean task by September 2052 -- 2052, more than 108 years after Hanford was opened.

"Death Maps"
Back in the 1960s, Juanita Andrewjewski, a farmer's wife, created a "death map" of the area near her house -- with crosses for heart disease and circles for cancer. Soon, the map was strewn with crosses and circles; at one point, there were 67 of them.

The farmers in the area and people in Richland and the two neighboring towns, Pasco and Kennewick -- known collectively as the Tri-Cities -- are among the most highly radiated humans on earth.

It is a horrifying legacy.
Fifty-two buildings at Hanford are contaminated, and 240 square miles are uninhabitable due to the radioactivity that has seeped into the soil and groundwater: uranium, cesium, strontium, plutonium and other deadly radionuclides.

Altogether, more than 204,000 cubic meters of highly radioactive waste remain on site -- two-thirds of the total for the entire US.

Radioactive Clouds
The plants also emitted radioactive clouds, which were carried by the wind all the way to Oregon, Idaho and Montana and even up into Canada.

The people affected by the fallout, the so-called "downwinders," suffered the most during the initial phase, between 1945 and 1951, when they were irradiated with iodine-131, which slipped into the food chain through livestock, milk and eggs.
In addition, thousands upon thousands of workers, residents and farmers were deliberately contaminated -- for testing purposes.

On December 3, 1949, Hanford physicists released a highly radioactive cloud through the smokestack of the so-called T-Plant, the world's largest plutonium factory at the time.

The radiation was almost 1,000 times more than what was released during the 1979 meltdown at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania, the worst nuclear accident in American history.

Fallout from the experiment, which was called "Green Run," drifted all the way to California.
People wondered why they suddenly got sick.

Studies would eventually show that some babies at Hanford were radiated twice as much as the children of Chernobyl.

Before the "Green Run," Tom Bailie, the 2-year-old son of a farmer loved to play in the fields.
But then he suffered an inexplicable paralysis; later, he wouldn't be able to father children.
His entire family died of cancer.

Last year, there were 210 earthquakes in the Hanford area, the strongest measuring 3.0.
But the fact that they aren't so severe does little to reassure environmentalists.

"The leaking underground tanks and the contaminated groundwater moving toward the river mean a radioactive future for the river unless the mess can be cleaned up in time to avoid a serious radiological disaster," says Glen Spain, a regional director for the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen's Associations (PCFFA).
"The legacy of vast amounts of nuclear waste … is still a ticking time bomb."

A 1990 DOE analysis of downwinders showed that newborns and infants were highly contaminated because of milk.

Illnesses related to Nuclear Waste Exposure:
Cancers of the bile ducts, bone, brain, breast, colon, esophagus, gallbladder, liver (primary site, but not if cirrhosis or hepatitis B is indicated), lung (including bronchioloalveolar cancer), pancreas, pharynx, ovary, salivary gland, small intestine, stomach, thyroid, urinary tract (kidney/renal, pelvis, urinary bladder, and urethra) Leukemia (except chronic lymphocytic leukemia) Lymphomas (except Hodgkin’s disease) Multiple myeloma (cancer of plasma cells), Acute Radiation Syndrome.

WE KNOW THAT RADIATION CAUSES BRAIN TUMORS IN CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS

HERE IS THE CONCLUSION OF JUST ONE OF SCORES OF STUDIES:

" In this group of intracranial meningiomas in individuals <30 years, ionizing radiation was a risk factor and tumors were more common in females. A higher percentage of WHO grade II and III tumors at presentation and recurrence was noted. Recurrent tumors were more common in patients with higher WHO grade and in radiation-induced meningiomas."

Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists - Jan 1988

BECAUSE HANFORD OFFICIALS AND THE REGULATING AGENCIES HAVE FOUGHT FOR DECADES TO AVOID BLAME, TO DENY THAT ANY DIED BECAUSE OF HANFORD, AND BECAUSE OFFICIAL CAUSES OF DEATH WERE OFTEN INTENTIONALLY MISLEADING OR FAILED TO CONSIDER THE RADIATION AS A CAUSE OF DEATH, WE CAN ONLY ESTIMATE THAT THOUSANDS OF BABIES DIED AS A RESULT OF HANFORD RADIATION.

HOW MANY THOUSANDS ARE CURRENTLY DYING NO ONE CAN SAY, BUT THE STORY WE SAW IN THE VIDEO AT THE TOP OF THIS BLOG , THE DEATHS OF HUNDREDS OF BABIES IN ONE COUNTY ALONE, MULTIPLIED BY THE NUMBER OF COUNTIES THAT RECEIVED LETHAL DOSES OF RADIATION EVERY YEAR SINCE HANFORD CAME ONLINE MAKES ONE WEEP.

WHAT AN UNNECESSARY WASTE OF LIVES!
WHAT A CONTINUING TRAGEDY!

WE NEED TO DO ALL WE CAN TO MAKE THIS SITUATION KNOWN, TO HELP ALL WHO HAVE BEEN AND ARE NOW AFFECTED BY THIS.
WE NEED TO CALL OUR CONGRESSMEN.

IF YOU KNOW OF ANYONE AFFECTED BY THIS, PASS THIS ON SO THEY CAN CONTACT ONE OF THE ORGANIZATIONS SEEKING AN END TO THE KILLING.

[PLEASE, IF YOU FIND A BROKEN LINK, LET ME KNOW!]
