7.6 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKES STRIKE BRAZIL AND PERU

The 7.6 quake near Iberia, Peru came at 16:45:38 UTC and was followed by the 7.6 quake near Tarauaca, Brazil at 16:50:53 UTC.

THESE WERE TWO SEPARATE QUAKES OF IDENTICAL MAGNITUDE, COMING 5 MINUTES APART.

Buildings swayed in several Peruvian cities -- Cuzco, Tacna, Pucallpa and Arequipa -- as well as in parts of northern Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia and Venezuela, local media reported.

Three aftershocks have so far struck the areas, two of magnitude 4.6, one magnitude 4.5.

PERU   The earthquake, which struck at 5:45 p.m. local time on Tuesday, was centered in a jungle area about 173 kilometers (107 miles) west-northwest of Iberia in Peru, or 247 kilometers (153 miles) west of Brasileia in Brazil.

It struck about 602 kilometers (374 miles) deep, making it a deep earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Computer models from the USGS estimated that nearly 1.2 million people in the region may have felt the earthquake, including some 30,000 people who may have experienced "strong" to "very strong" shaking. It was not immediately known if there was any damage or casualties, though the depth and the location of the earthquake are expected to significantly reduce its impact.

No tsunami warnings have been issued because the earthquake struck on land, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

Other details were not immediately available.

BRAZIL
The quake in Brazil is now being termed an aftershock of the Peruvian quake.

Again, no immediate reports of damage or loss of life as we await updates.

Because of the depth of these twin quakes, damage should be minimal.
