“People’s understanding of disasters will continue to be constructed by media. How media members frame the presence of risk and the nature of disasters matters.”
-Celine Marie Pascale, American University, Mar 10, 2015
"At no time in history have so many unanticipated man-made events occurred at the same time, having so much impact on so many people, and in so many ways. We have been reduced to merely reacting to these events, because we do not have the ability to predict them, and because so many of our approaches to risk management lack foresight and agility.
Being governed by man-made risks implies, however, that we have the power to do something about it, but doing so will require thought leadership, the devotion of many more resources to combat these issues, and a sustained effort aimed at combating them - at all levels of society.
Man-made risk is everyone’s problem, is on all of our doorsteps, and will require our best effort to combat its ill effects. "
ABE HAS LIED ABOUT FUKUSHIMA, SAYS FORMER PRIME MINISTER.
IT'S A DANGER TO THE ENTIRE WORLD AND MAY NEVER BE UNDER CONTROL.
FROM BLOOMBERG NEWS:September 7, 2016
"Former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi blasted current premier Shinzo Abe’s stance that the situation at the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant is under control.
“It’s a lie,” an impassioned Koizumi, 74, told reporters in Tokyo on Wednesday. “They keep saying it’s going to be under control, but still it’s not effective. I really want to know how you can tell a lie like that.”
More than five years after the meltdowns at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi plant, the operator -- Tokyo Electric Power Co. Holdings Inc. -- continues to struggle to contain the radiation-contaminated water that inundates the plant.
The former prime minister backed the use of nuclear power during his years in office from 2001-2006, but now says he regrets that he had been ignorant about its risks and is campaigning for its abolition.
“When I was prime minister, I believed what they told me. I believed it was a cheap, safe and clean form of energy,” Koizumi said. "I’m now ashamed of myself for believing those lies for so long."
Koizumi contested claims by Abe’s administration that a nuclear watchdog is imposing the world’s most stringent safety standards in the earthquake-prone nation. “If you compare the Japanese regulations to those in America, you realize how much looser the Japanese regulations are,” he said.
“Abe knows the arguments on both sides, but he still believes the arguments for nuclear power generation,” Koizumi added.
Koizumi also blasted Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA), saying that its chief, Shunichi Tanaka, gave permission to restart the Sendai reactor in the southern Japanese island of Kyushu despite having reservations about its safety.
[MY NOTE: HE DIDN'T MENTION THAT THE NRA, THE ABE GOVERNMENT AND TEPCO WERE REVEALED AS HAVING WITHHELD PERTINENT DATA, TRUE RADIATION READINGS AND ALSO KEPT CITIZENS IN THE DARK ABOUT HOW EXTENSIVE THE RADIATION CONTAMINATION WAS. WE KNOW HOW THEY ALL WORKED TOGETHER IN THE "BIG LIE" NOW.
HE ALSO DIDN'T MENTION IN THIS PARTICULAR SPEECH THAT SCIENTISTS AROUND THE WORLD HAVE SCOFFED AT AND EVEN JOKED ABOUT THE ABJECT STUPIDITY AND FUTILITY OF THAT MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR "ICE WALL" TEPCO BUILT TO CONTAIN THE LEAKS INTO THE PACIFIC, BUT THAT IS A KNOWN FAILURE.
SEE: Asahi Shimbun, Sep 2, 2016 : Typhoons cause ‘ice wall’ to melt at Fukushima nuclear plant ]
On March 10, 2016, the eve of the fifth anniversary of the disaster, Abe said that Japan can’t do without nuclear power.
OTHER NATIONS HAVE PROVEN THIS IS NOT TRUE.
SUSTAINABLE ENERGY, SOLAR, WIND, WAVE AND GEOTHERMAL, HAS BECOME EXTREMELY AFFORDABLE, IS COMPLETELY POSSIBLE FOR EVEN ENORMOUS NATIONS LIKE CHINA, WHICH IS INVESTING VERY HEAVILY IN SUCH SUSTAINABLES, BUT THE BIG OIL, BIG GAS AND BIG COAL BOYS JUST WILL NOT LET GO OF THEIR LITERAL DEATH GRIP ON HUMANITY.
OUR AMERICAN CONGRESS IS COMPLETELY SOLD-OUT TO FEEDING THE OIL/GAS/COAL COMPANIES WITH FANTASTIC SUBSIDIES (CORPORATE WELFARE), GRANTS, TAX BREAKS AND IS EVER BUSY CREATING REGULATORY LOOPHOLES THAT ALLOW THESE GIANTS TO CONTAMINATE EVERY STREAM AND EVERY ACRE OF GROUND IN THE U.S. WHILE SAVING THEMSELVES BILLIONS ON MAKING THEIR ENERGY SOURCES SAFER AND LESS TOXIC.
THE MORE CONGRESS GIVES TO THE "BIG 3", THE MORE CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS THEY CAN COUNT ON.
IF THAT ISN'T THE DEFINITION OF PROSTITUTION, WHAT IS?
THE WHORES OF CAPITOL HILL BOUGHT BY THE 'JOHNS' OF WALL STREET, EVERY DAY.
IT'S PROBABLY THE SAME WHEREVER YOU LIVE.
SINCE DAY 1 OF THE JAPANESE DISASTER IN 2011, HUNDREDS OF RESPECTED SCIENTISTS HAVE TRIED TO TELL US THE FACTS, TRIED TO WARN US, BUT MOST WOULD RATHER LIVE IN PEACEFUL, BLISSFUL IGNORANCE THAN CONCERN THEMSELVES WITH FACTS HERE IN AMERICA.
ALSO, MOST JUST DON'T BOTHER TO READ THE NEWS....INTERFERES WITH HAPPY TIMES...WITH THE FANTASY WORLD MOST HAVE CHOSEN TO LIVE IN.
Japanese American physicist Michio Kaku has been very outspoken on the issue of Fukushima, even to the point of losing his temper in more than one interview.
He, too, calls it a BIG LIE, one which he says creates a worldwide crisis.
In an interview soon after the meltdown, Kaku claimed that, “The slightest disturbance could set off a full-scale meltdown at three nuclear power stations, far beyond what we saw at Chernobyl.”
Michio Kaku on CNN: "Fukushima: They Lied to Us" .
It will be ANOTHER 50 to 100 YEARS to start hoping they find a way to control the radiation leaks.
Meanwhile there'll be more dumping into the Pacific, more radiation released into the atmosphere, more radiation hitting our west coast.
Kaku states that there was 100% meltdown of corium in all 3 reactors. R
He is incensed that radiation badges are handed out to school kids there.
They KNOW everything within 100 miles or more is radioactive but are forcing people to return to the villages because of their IMAGE for the 2020 Olympics.
What Abe has done and continues to do is CRIMINAL!
"Radiation is the invisible killer that stalks the earth, but for many, it is hardly worth a thought. "
March 9, 2016
Shunichi Yamashita, an Abe-proclaimed 'expert' on the effects of radioactivity, was invited by the Fukushima prefecture in the aftermath of the meltdown to reassure rather than investigate.
“The effects of radiation,” he claimed, “do not come to people who are happy and laughing, they come to people who are weak-minded.”
Smile with upbeat confidence, and the problem goes away, suggests Yamashita.
[ He was later forced to resign from his position in March, 2013, BTW, as Japanese people became visibly hostile to the Abe regime over his uncouth, idiotic remarks.
He has since admitted how stupid his remarks were.
According to a recently published interview in the Asahi Shimbun, one of five national daily Japanese newspapers, Yamashita demonstrated that he did not even understand the basics of the lingering disaster and that he "did nothing to seek out information so he could give informed opinions about what people should do."]
This Dr. Strangelove dismissiveness is as much an advertisement for the virtues of doom as it is about the brutal consequences, real and imaginary, of radiation poisoning.
Such fabulously misguided nonsense is central to the amnesiac context of Fukushima. Makiko Segawa put it rather poignantly in his contribution in the Asia-Pacific Journal:
Writing a year after the disaster, Segawa noted how “the journalists have packed up and gone and by accident of design Japan’s government seems to be mobilizing its agenda, aware that it is under less scrutiny.”
MASSIVE MEDIA COVERUP AND INTENTIONAL NON-REPORTING
Robert Jacobs similar notes that Fukushima conforms to that litany of disasters that has afflicted the human experience, a matter of rejection and experience rather than learning and adapting. “Fukushima is taking its place alongside the many forgotten nuclear disasters of the last 70 years.”
Sociologist Celine Marie Pascale of the American University, on scouring some 2,100 news stories from four media outlets (The New York Times, Washington Post, The Huffington Post and Politico) came to the conclusion that a strategy of minimisation was underway.
The implications of such an event had to be downplayed, de-emphasising the risk of massive contamination and environmental disaster.
A mere 6 percent of the articles examined the health implications of the event.
“We see articles in prestigious news outlets claiming that radioactivity from cosmic rays and rocks is more dangerous than the radiation emanating from the collapsing Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.”
THAT IS NOT TRUE.
DENY, DENY, THEN LIE
A necessary process of mendacity has to come into play.
The Tokyo Electric Power Plant (TEPCO), Japan’s largest power company and owner of the affected power plants, initially denied the existence of meltdowns when it knew three had taken place.
It was a process of deception that continued for three months after the event, a situation made even more absurd for the fact that hundreds of thousands were evacuated in the vicinity.
It is a disaster episode that keeps on giving.
Even in March 2015, their reassurances seemed less than comforting. Chief Decommissioning Officer Naohiro Masuda would claim rather blandly that, “Even if some contaminated water remains, I feel that we can reduce a substantial amount of risk.”
THAT WAS JUST ANOTHER LIE.
The nuclear genie is a creature that encourages the lie in planning establishments.
There are lies about safety; there are lies about legacies.
As Jacobs suggests, the Disneyfication of disaster sites affected by the nuclear or atomic scourge is all too real.
The Manhattan Project that led to the development of the atomic weapons used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki became “Disney theme parks of American exceptionalism”.
The quest for the nuclear option in both the military and energy contexts saw massive environmental degradation.
WE WERE TOLD IT WAS WORTH IT.
Even now, the ghostly sense of Fukushima should be a reminder of errors and negligence rather than dismissal and indifference.
Jacobs suggests a simple but necessary formula to combat nuclear amnesia: see the impacts of radiation exposure “before they become vaguely visible as cancers nestled in health population statistics”.
We also now know that “several thousand” becquerels of neptunium-239 was found in Date City. neptunium-239 evolves into plutonium-239 that has a half life of 24,200 years. These findings show that Date City has a significant plutonium contamination that neither TEPCO or the government are aware of or admitting. It was previously disclosed that Iitate-Mura had the same kinds of heavy plutonium contamination.
This is a big problem, plutonium has some serious health risks and it is being found in large amounts 60km from the plant.
The government and TEPCO have been trying to focus public attention on first iodine-131 and now on cesium-137.
They rarely test for or mention stronium-90 or plutonium-239, two isotopes that are considerably more dangerous.
The nuclear research that discovered the findings is not releasing all of the information or their name.
They stated they want the information to make it to a peer reviewed journal outside Japan first, expressing concerns about the government squashing the information. In light of the current situation in Japan this is an understandable action by the researcher.
THE VERY SAME THING, PLUTONIUM FOUND MILES FROM THE NUCLEAR SITE, HAS RECENTLY HAPPENED IN NEW MEXICO, A RESULT OF FIRES AT THE WIPP NUCLEAR WASTE DISPOSAL FACILITY:
Carlsbad Current-Argus, Sept. 9, 2014: DOE will provide WIPP update next week — It appears the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant is far from reopening… According to photographic evidence made public by the DOE, it appears a chemical reaction caused an explosion inside one of the waste drums. The explosion melted through portions of the drum, and the incident triggered a small release of americium and plutonium into the outside air about half a mile from the facility.
“Plutonium… about half a mile from the facility”?
MAKE THAT 30 MILES AWAY!
Recently published air monitoring data from the state of New Mexico indicates that soon after the WIPP radioactive release 3 types of plutonium were found nearly 30 miles away in Carlsbad, the state’s 10th largest city.

FUKUSHIMA POLONIUM AND IODINE-131 FOUND IN DANGEROUSLY HIGH LEVELS IN SOUTHEAST U.S. BY NASA.
Jun 28, 2015 - NASA Experts: Southeast US hit by “anomalously high” levels of polonium.
Journal of Environmental Radioactivity, W. Yang and L. Guo, NASA Stennis Space Center and Univ. of Southern Mississippi Dept. of Marine Science, 2012
"To date, excess 210Po in the atmosphere was only reported for high temperature activities such as volcanic eruptions or degassing…
Therefore, the anomalously high 210Po/210Pb ratios observed in the southern US were mostly derived from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant explosions which could have resulted in the fractionation of environmental 210Po and 210Pb and thus the preferential release of volatile 210Po into the atmosphere.
Indeed, the anomalous 210Po/210Pb ratios were accompanied by the peak fallout of 131I… indicating that the Fukushima nuclear plant explosions mainly contributed to the anomaly in the 210Po/210Pb ratio…
CAN EVERYONE SEE THE LIES YET?
DOES ANYONE WANT TO SEE?
"The crisis in Japan has been described as “a nuclear war without a war”. In the words of renowned novelist Haruki Murakami:
“This time no one dropped a bomb on us … We set the stage, we committed the crime with our own hands, we are destroying our own lands, and we are destroying our own lives.”Nuclear radiation –which threatens life on planet earth– is not front page news in comparison to the most insignificant issues of public concern, including the local level crime scene or the tabloid gossip reports on Hollywood celebrities.
While the long-term repercussions of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster are yet to be fully assessed, they are far more serious than those pertaining to the 1986 Chernobyl disaster in the Ukraine, which resulted in almost one million deaths (New Book Concludes – Chernobyl death toll: 985,000, mostly from cancer Global Research, September 10, 2010, See also Matthew Penney and Mark Selden The Severity of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster: Comparing Chernobyl and Fukushima, Global Research, May 25, 2011).
The shaky political consensus both in Japan, the U.S. and Western Europe is that the crisis at Fukushima has been contained.
The realties, however, are otherwise.
Fukushima 3 was leaking unconfirmed amounts of plutonium.
According to Dr. Helen Caldicott, “one millionth of a gram of plutonium, if inhaled can cause cancer”.
The Japanese government has been obliged to acknowledge that “the severity rating of its nuclear crisis … matches that of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster”. In a bitter irony, however, this tacit admission by the Japanese authorities has proven to have been part of the cover-up of a significantly larger catastrophe, resulting in a process of global nuclear radiation and contamination:
“While Chernobyl was an enormous unprecedented disaster, it only occurred at one reactor and rapidly melted down. Once cooled, it was able to be covered with a concrete sarcophagus that was constructed with 100,000 workers. There are a staggering 4400 tons of nuclear fuel rods at Fukushima, which greatly dwarfs the total size of radiation sources at Chernobyl.” ( Extremely High Radiation Levels in Japan: University Researchers Challenge Official Data, Global Research, April 11, 2011)
The dumping of highly radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean constitutes a potential trigger to a process of global radioactive contamination. Radioactive elements have not only been detected in the food chain in Japan, radioactive rain water has been recorded in California:
“Hazardous radioactive elements being released in the sea and air around Fukushima accumulate at each step of various food chains (for example, into algae, crustaceans, small fish, bigger fish, then humans; or soil, grass, cow’s meat and milk, then humans). Entering the body, these elements – called internal emitters – migrate to specific organs such as the thyroid, liver, bone, and brain, continuously irradiating small volumes of cells with high doses of alpha, beta and/or gamma radiation, and over many years often induce cancer”. (Helen Caldicott, Fukushima: Nuclear Apologists Play Shoot the Messenger on Radiation, The Age, April 26, 2011).
BELOW: “A map of citizens’ measured radiation levels shows radioactivity is distributed in a complex pattern reflecting the mountainous terrain and the shifting winds across a broad area of Japan north of Tokyo which is in the center of the of bottom of the map.”
SOURCE: Science Magazine“Radiation limits begin to be exceeded at just above 0.1 microsieverts/ hour (blue). Red is about fifty times the civilian radiation limit at 5.0 microsieverts/hour. Because children are much more sensitive than adults, these results are a great concern for parents of young children in potentially affected areas.”
The crisis in Japan has also brought into the open the unspoken relationship between nuclear energy and nuclear war.
Nuclear Energy and Nuclear War
Nuclear energy is not a civilian economic activity.
It is an appendage of the nuclear weapons industry which is controlled by the so-called defense contractors. The powerful corporate interests behind nuclear energy and nuclear weapons overlap.
In Japan at the height of the disaster, “the nuclear industry and government agencies [were] scrambling to prevent the discovery of atomic-bomb research facilities hidden inside Japan’s civilian nuclear power plants”.1 (See Yoichi Shimatsu, Secret Weapons Program Inside Fukushima Nuclear Plant? Global Research, April 12, 2011)
It should be noted that the complacency of both the media and the governments to the hazards of nuclear radiation pertains to the nuclear energy industry as well as to to use of nuclear weapons. In both cases, the devastating health impacts of nuclear radiation are casually denied. Tactical nuclear weapons with an explosive capacity of up to six times a Hiroshima bomb are labelled by the Pentagon as “safe for the surrounding civilian population”.
No concern has been expressed at the political level as to the likely consequences of a US-NATO-Israel attack on Iran, using “safe for civilians” tactical nuclear weapons against a non-nuclear state.
Such an action would result in “the unthinkable”: a nuclear holocaust over a large part of the Middle East and Central Asia.
A nuclear nightmare, however, would occur even if nuclear weapons were not used.
The bombing of Iran’s nuclear facilities using conventional weapons would contribute to unleashing another Fukushima type disaster with extensive radioactive fallout. (For further details See Michel Chossudovsky, Towards a World War III Scenario, The Dangers of Nuclear War, Global Research, Montreal, 2011)
In the face of ceaseless media disinformation, this Global Research Online I-Book on the dangers of global nuclear radiation is intended to break the media vacuum and raise public awareness, while also pointing to the complicity of the governments, the media and the nuclear industry.
We call upon our readers to spread the word.
We invite university, college and high school teachers to make this Interactive Reader on Fukushima available to their students.
